Ducats use growing

It has been 2 months since our Ducats Currency was launched. In this time we have signed up about 25 businesses and more than D$4,000 have been circulated into the local community. Also, 100+ sets of Ducats have been sold to collectors. Only one business has pulled out because they felt it was not working for them at this time and may join at a later stage.
A number of shoppers are regularly exchanging their dollars for ducats and enjoy supporting new businesses for the first time.
There are now 2 Ducats Exchanges where shoppers can get their ducats (with 10% bonus) - Lost Shepparton Shop located at 154 Welsford St and Focus Cards and Gifts in the Mall.
Just recently we formed a not-for-profit association, Shepparton Ducats Currency Inc, which will oversee the management, development and financials to ensure their long term viability as a local currency in the Shepparton community.

Our Ducats launched knowing it would evolve

A few days ago I learnt to ride a Segway. I am not much into trying new thrillseeking things where I could fall and do some damage...or look a real goose. It must be older age setting in and being very much aware of one's mortality.
So I went with some apprehension and left it till last to be shown what to do. My wife, Judy, went first. I was pretty clumsy at first then I got the hang of it and loved the experience.
I am much more confident in turning my ideas into reality and launching the idea even though there are still questions and some uncertainty. This was the case with launching Shepparton's Ducats. In many ways we launched before we were ready but.. It was time, it would evolve.
Seth Godin (world's number one business blogger) sums it up well...
Show your work
"It's tempting to sit in the corner and then, voila, to amaze us all with your perfect answer.
But of course, that's not what ever works.
What works is evolving in public, with the team.
Showing your work. Thinking out loud. Failing on the way to succeeding, imperfecting on your way to better than good enough.

Do people want to be stuck with the first version of the iPhone, the Ford, the Chanel dress? Do they want to read the first draft of that novel, see the rough cut of that film? Of course not.
Ship before you're ready, because you will never be ready. Ready implies you know it's going to work, and you can't know that. You should ship when you're prepared, when it's time to show your work, but not a minute later.
The purpose isn't to please the critics. The purpose is to make your work better.
Polish with your peers, your true fans, the market. Because when we polish together, we make better work."

The birth of Shepparton's Ducats

A very exciting day for all of those involved in the creation of Shepparton's own currency. The beautifully designed notes rolled off the printing press to reveal a work of art that our city should be proud to to call our own.

The printing process was in 3 stages. The first stage was to print the artwork. The next stage the gold ducat was printed with metallic ink and finally, as shown here, the serial numbers were added. Scott Almond explained that this printing press is very versatile and is multi-functional. It is an Original Heidelberg and is 60+ years old.

The whole process of of designing and producing the Shepparton Ducats was done at Willprint. We would like to thank Karen Sibley for the design and Ian and his printing team for giving Shepparton's, and maybe Australia's first local currency.

The Dollar for Australia now Ducats for Shepparton

50 years ago on Feb 14th, 1966 ... In came the Dollars and Cents and out went the Pounds, Shillings and Pence.
See the video and jingle here.
In Shepparton, in 12 days, we will see our own local currency launched...also an exciting occasion.
Shepparton's own Ducats will compliment our decimal currency to support local businesses in particular.
Final design tweaks are nearly done and then off to a Shepparton printer, where else?
Official Launch: Shepparton City Market - Friday 26th & 27th, in the Mall look out for the Ducat Exchange.
After this event the Ducat Exchange will be at the Lost Shepparton Shop.
Participating businesses here.
More info about our Ducats here.

The Dollar very nearly had another name altogether.
There was a royal uproar when it was announced and many views and opinions were bandied around....
In April 1963, Prime Minister Robert Menzies announced that pounds, shillings and pence were to be ditched in favour of decimal coinage.
In the wake of this bombshell, the whole country had an opinion about what the new money should be named.
The kwid, the champ, the deci-mate and even the hughes were among hundreds of names suggested.
There were other, more tempered possibilities — the austral and the emu had their supporters — but one name was the standout, the obvious and best choice, and on June 5, 1963, Treasurer Harold Holt revealed all.
Our currency would be, he told Parliament and an expectant nation, the royal.
Holt said that after a "close and careful examination", not one of the other possible contenders had been able to beat it.
None "would be fully acceptable to the public", he said.
According to the Treasurer, they lacked "such desirable attributes as brevity and pleasing sound".
Royal was a dignified, distinctive name, Holt said, with the advantage of emphasising Australia's link with the Crown.
These ties went deeper with the minor denominations. The royal was divided into 100 cents, with the coins named after their pre-decimal predecessors — the crown (50 cents), the florin (20 cents) and the shilling (10 cents).
The public, Holt said, would get used to the idea of the royal once the novelty had worn off.
He was dead wrong.

We have had a great response from locally-owned businesses in Corio St and Vaughan St. Brad at Luke's Magic Meats can't wait till they are used in his shop. It shows him that those customers are proud to support his shop and spread the buy-local message.
SPC Ardmona Factory Sales have recently joined too and Andrew Prentice is excited that Shepparton now has a unified way for local businesses and their customers to work together to keep more of the local spend in the city.
See here for the list of participating businesses. Spread the word to help us to add more businesses to give you more choice.
