The Facebook post below by Leah Vincent sparked a search for information about the drowning of the two girls and where on the Goulburn River it may have occurred. A terrible tragedy which uncovered many photos, newspaper articles and further information.

Portrait of Private Jim Howard taken in Shepparton while recuperating from Enteric Fever, caused while in the Trenches in Gallipoli. After being in hospital in Malta for some time Jim was sent back to Australia to convalese. This was when he heard of his Sister's Nellie and Annie's tragic drowning. Note the black armband on the sleeve of his uniform..

Catherine (Katie) , younger sister of Nellie and Annie Howard, who drowned in the swimming hole, sadly succumbed to the debilitating illness of T.B.. This was in 1927 and Katie was just 22 years of age. She was a beautiful girl, who I was told, loved to dance. Photo. Katie in the Mooroopna hospital in 1926, the year before she died. |

Continuing the sad stories of the Michael/Ellen Howard family. WW1 soldier Jim was killed on the 9th. February, 1943.
When Jim Howard returned from serving in Gallipoli and France, WW1, he gained employment with the Victorian Railways and tragedy struck when the train he was driving was hit by a train coming towards him on the same line. This was on the 9th. February, 1943. More Howard sadness! (Pam) |

HOWARD. Youngest daughter Bridgie married Leslie Michael (Pud) Butterfield.. Sadly they lost their eldest daughter at age 14. She had Leukaemia..
Pud, after being captured by the German's in Crete in 1941 spent 4 years in the P.O.W. Camp,Oflag 79, Waggum, Germany. Nine years later,in Shepparton, Pud passed away suddenly at the R.S.L. Club while playing cards with his fellow ex-servicemen.. (Pam) |
